Growing In Knowledge

Imbibing From The Great Christian Writers

Jan 18, 2007

Saying For Today: Imbibe often from those great Christians, especially from those of past ages, who challenge you to think thoroughly and deeply, not those who pamper your present ideas.

Wisdom Story

The baby in the family is learning to talk. Mother tries to teach him or her to call father "Papa" or "Daddy." But baby is only a year old and says only "Pa" or "Da" every time! Now does this make the father angry, that his little one cannot yet perfectly pronounce the name?

Likewise, God understands our mistakes where he is concerned. And he patiently waits for the unfolding of our understanding.

*Told by Sri Ramakrishna, Indian saint

Scripture: Proverbs 1.7 (CEV)

7Respect and obey the LORD!

This is the beginning
of knowledge. Only a fool rejects wisdom
and good advice.

Comments

Part of the practice of being the body of Christ is receiving of wisdom and good advice from across the ages. One of the best practices you who seek to live a spiritual Christianity can do is imbibe daily from great writers~writers who share more than ideas. Read persons, when you read, whom you feel their passion of heart reaching across time to touch your heart with love of the living Christ and ardor for extending yourself beyond the limits of where you have been before in thought and action.

Imbibe often from those great Christians who challenge you to think thoroughly and deeply, especially from those of past ages, not those who pamper your present ideas. Avoid the popular "soft" devotionals that are much fluff and little substance. Much of this fluff religion sells much for it appeals to many. But, you are not among the many in aspirations of thought and life. You have chosen a higher path and are to read those authors fitting to those aspirations.

Last, we are here to grow in wisdom and insight. We will take only that wisdom and insight we have gained here into the passage beyond this present life. The Divine does not expect us to be perfect in our knowledge, infallible in our insight. Our fear of being wrong need not deter us from the daring to affirm what we have before not affirmed and the releasing of the past truths that no longer appear true after thorough and prayerful investigation.
