Meeting God

The Joy Of Discovering God In The World

Aug 5, 2005

Saying For Today: Did you meet God today?

A little boy wanted to meet God. He knew it was a long trip to where God lived, so he packed his suitcase with Twinkies and a six-pack of root beer and started the journey. When he had walked about three blocks, he met an old woman. She was sitting in the park staring at pigeons. The boy sat down next to her. He opened his suitcase. He was about to take a drink of root beer, when he noticed that the lady looked hungry. So, the boy offered her a Twinkie. She gratefully accepted it and smiled to him. Her smile was so beautiful that the boy wanted to see it again. He, therefore, offered her a root beer. Again she smiled at him. This delighted the boy! They sat together all afternoon, eating and smiling, but they never spoke a word.

Near dark, the boy realized how tired he was, and he got up to leave. After a few steps he turned, ran back to the aged woman, and gave her a hug. She gave him her biggest smile, yet.

When the boy opened the door to his home, his mother was surprised by the look of joy on his face. She inquired, "What did you do today that made you so happy?" He said, "I had lunch with God." Before his mother could respond, he added, "You know what? She's got the most beautiful smile I've ever seen!"

Meanwhile, the woman, also radiant with joy, returned to her home. The look of peace on her face stunned her son. He asked, “Mother, what did you do today that made you so happy?" She said, "I ate Twinkies in the park with God." Before her son responded, she added, "You know, he's much younger than I expected."

Did you meet God today? Where? What was God like?

Would you pray the following?
“God, this day I want to meet you. Show me where you are.”

Spiritual Exercise
1. Reflect on the above story. What meanings does it have for you? Explain.
2. Where is God, really?

Prayer

Dear holy Christ, who can see into every heart
And read every mind:
Take hold of my thoughts.
Bring my thoughts back to me,
And clasp me to yourself. Amen.
