The Terrain of Intimacy with Life Itself

A Call to Unceasing Exploration

Dec 17, 2006

Saying For Today: Rather the Christian experience is an adventure of discovering the terrain of intimacy with Life Itself.

The Four Corners is the only place in the United States where four states connect at one point. Writer T. H. Watkins, in National Geographic, writes of this area of 100,000 square miles as "endlessly various and fascinating in its forms. Much of this I have come to think of as my own country...." He writes:

I have spent several years exploring this western landscape, driving its roads, flying over it, hiking into its canyons, camping along its rivers, soaking it up, taking it in, sometimes writing about it, most of the time just thinking about its warps and tangles of rock and sky. This is not an idle passion. It stems from a deeply held conviction that the Four Corners country has something essential to offer us.

The concept "God" has become trite for many in our culture. Still the Reality of God calls for unceasing exploration. The Scripture uses the word "know" for this exploration in intimacy.

I want you to show love,
not offer sacrifices.
I want you to know me
more than I want burnt offerings. (Hosea 6.6, NLT)

If interest in the Reality of the Divine is to be renewed in our society, it must begin with those who have allowed the concept "God' to become trite. This allowance is partly due to turning Christian faith into a heady-experience. Rather the Christian experience is an adventure of discovering the terrain of intimacy with Life Itself.

Hawkins has enjoyed a fascination with the landscape of the Four Corners. Those who are growing into intimacy with Christ know the joy of becoming intimate with the landscape of Spirit. They never tire of the adventure of Life. And, to them, the concept "God" has died, and the Reality of the Beloved fills their hearts with Love and their minds with understanding-beyond-understanding.

Suggested Reflection:

1) How would you describe your spiritual journey to a person who is considering such a journey?

2) Explain who God is to you without reference to the word "God"?
