Wells That Hold Water

The Gift of Pure Prayer

Feb 26, 2007

Saying For Today: Prayer is communion between the Greater and the lesser, the Sufficient and the insufficient, the Supply and the need, Immensity and limitation.

Scripture

John 7.37~ERV

The last day of the festival came. It was the most important day. On that day Jesus stood and said with a loud voice, "If a person is thirsty, let him come to me and drink."

Jeremiah 2.13~BBE

For my people have done two evils; they have given up me, the fountain of living waters, and have made for themselves water-holes, cut out from the rock, broken water-holes, of no use for storing water.

Wisdom Quote

Come all you who are thirsty to the living waters. Do not lose your precious moments in digging wells that cannot hold water.... Come, you starving souls, who cannot find anything to satisfy you. Come, and you shall be filled! Come, you poor troubled ones, bending beneath your load of misery and suffering, and you shall be given comfort! Come, you sick, to your physician. Do not be afraid to come near him. For you are filled with diseases. Show them, and they will be healed!

Comments

Prayer is approach. Prayer is communion between the Greater and the lesser, the Sufficient and the insufficient, the Supply and the need, Immensity and limitation.

Prayer is the act of showing up, being present and open. Prayer is saying, "I'm thirsty. I can't find living water outside You, water that will truly, lastingly satisfy my longings for love, joy, and peace." Prayer is confessing, "I no longer choose to invest in activities and habits promising blessing but leaving me famished and parched, sapped and dry, lost to the fullness only You offer me, and freely."

Anyone can choose to pray. Yet, often we must find ourselves exhausted with digging out wells that will not hold for us life-giving water. So many persons, activities, accomplishments, and habits promise fullness but leave us empty.

Devote yourselves to prayer, and give yourselves to devotion. You will be doing a sacred work of hewing out from the rock of life a well of ever-replenishing water. This life of ardent love, through Pure Prayer, yields the fruit of the being and work of Christ Jesus, through the Holy Spirit within.

Knowledge will guide you
to the home of the Beloved

But only desire will lay you
at His side

A drop of rain fell between us
A flood quenched all ache of separation

A Rose petal fell upon the bed
His eyes flowed with pure Light

Cloud descending, pulled us together,
Where was I left to remember?

Don't offer me His picture,
when I can be held in His arms all night!

And what is this night, but the darkness
that reveals the Face of my only True Love?

Suggested Reflection

Do you feel you are spending enough time in prayer and devotion, daily? Explain.

Do you sense you are spending time investing in activities and relationships that are taking life from you rather than giving life to you? Explain.
