A disciple approached his Spiritual Teacher, “Master,” he spoke, “why do you seem never to get angry at those who oppose you, even when they look at you with hatefulness and resentment?” Replied the Teacher, “I see the One behind the mask.”
Comments
We wear many masks. The masks include expressions of emotion, positive or negative, helpful or harmful, selfless or selfish. Masks include, among others, anger, malice, jealousy, suspicion, hate; also, kindness, goodwill, love, gracefulness, joy.
Question for Reflection
Who is the Person behind the personality of each person you know, whether friend or foe?
Spiritual Exercise
First, think of someone who is adversarial toward you. Picture that person and see yourself standing before him or her. See Christ standing beside him or her. Speak to Christ, “Christ, help …, and help me love … as you love ….”
Second, think of someone who is friendly toward you. Picture that person and see yourself standing before him or her. See Christ standing beside him or her. Speak to Christ, “Christ, bless …, my friend, and thank you for …. Help me love … as you love me, unconditionally.”
