The miracle that followed spoke of the transformation begun by Jesus. The great amount of water spoke of the prodigious grace of God in Christ, as communicated by the Holy Spirit. The water turned to wine spoke of the new creation Grace was to work within the heart of all who receive the Person and Grace of the Triune Being.
Anyone who belongs to Christ is a new person. The past is forgotten,
and everything is new.

Mary, in the Gospel of John, played a pivotal role in prompting the beginning of Jesus' public ministry. The Divine worked in and through her to inspire her son to act in a way that would launch his public work.
This event addresses one way the Divine Presence inspires our process of discernment. Possibly, more than not, the Holy Spirit will use someone else to help us discern when and how to act in accord with the Divine will for us. We need is to remain open, not simply to do what someone thinks we should and when, but to how the Spirit might prompt us through a person or persons to step out and act, discontinuing the waiting that is often essential to a decision of spiritual commitment and its timing.
