Where Dwells a Mighty Tree

The Vision of Faith

Sep 11, 2007

Saying For Today: The vision of faith expands based on what we grow to trust God can do with the simple, minimal resources at our disposal.

Today’s Scripture ~ Hebrews 11.1-2 (CEV)

1Faith makes us sure of what we hope for and gives us proof of what we cannot see. 2It was their faith that made our ancestors pleasing to God.

Wisdom Saying

The most pathetic person in the world is someone who has sight, but has no vision.

*Helen Keller, blind author, educator (1880-1968)

Wisdom Story

A Hindu story tells of a father, Ammi, saying to his son, “Bring me a fruit from that tree and break it open.” The boy does so, and the father says, “What is in it?” “Some small seeds.” “Break one,” the father instructs him, “and tell me what you see.” “Nothing,” responds the boy. The father observes, “My son, where you see nothing there dwells a mighty tree.”

Comments

Our deeds will likely not exceed our vision. A wise saying is, “From exactly the same materials one man builds palaces while another builds hovels.”

Faith entails vision that sees the potential of the extraordinary in the ordinary. The vision of faith expands based on what we grow to trust God can do with the simple, minimal resources at our disposal.

One person looks into a seed and sees a forest of trees and many seasons of fruit. Another person looks into the same seed and sees only a seed.

When someone we love trusts us, does that not please us? The Hebrews writer informs us, not that God was pleased with our ancestor’s great achievements, but he affirms they themselves were pleasing to God because they trusted in God.

Suggested Reflections

Is God challenging you to trust the potential of what He can do in some area of your life? Will you, today, pray about that area and requests God to grace you with more faith in what He can do?
