Planting Now, Gathering Later

Storing Up Treasures

Nov 13, 2005

Saying For Today: Just think about this—What you are doing now is determining the extent of blessing you enjoy after this life.

Matthew 6:19-21 (NRSV)
Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust consume and where thieves break in and steal; but store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust consumes and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

Story
A funeral procession went through a busy intersection just as an armored truck pulled up from a side street. Not recognizing the line of cars as a funeral procession, the driver of the armored truck joined in. An onlooker remarked to his friend, “What do you know? You can take it with you.”

Thoughts
Regarding material things, we sometimes hear, “… you can’t take it with you.” The context is often, “So, enjoy it now” or “… spend it now.” The Scripture offers another advice. We can take something with us; or, we can have it waiting for us. We can have “treasures in heaven.” This is a way of saying, “What we do from unselfishness and for good, we can never lose.” Just think about this—What you are doing now is determining the extent of blessing you enjoy after this life. Grace provides the resolve and love from which we do the planting. Grace places our hearts at the right place, as we yield self-interests to the Divine Providence.
