St. Francis of Assisi is said to have spoken, “Preach the gospel at all times. If necessary, use words.” There are different ways of sharing the Gospel, and some more effective than words.
Contemplatives learn that one of the most effective proclamations of the Gospel is sharing the Presence. How do we do this? Possibly, we can better ask the question, “How can this happen through us?”
See, sharing the Presence is a natural matter, and it only sounds unnatural for we often live so cut off from the Presence. When we live in intimacy with the Wonderful Presence, it will emanate through us to others, just as a rose shares with all a pleasing aroma.
Therefore, do not first try to share the Gospel before you have drawn close to the Presence. Draw to the Presence, and the Presence will share itself with others through your being present to them. This is simple, and it begins with prayer, prayer, and more prayer. Without a life fully devoted to prayer and meditation, you will be greatly limited in your capacity to share the Presence.
Suggestion for Reflection Have you ever been around someone through whom you could sense the Presence as a natural expression of his or her presence? What is that like?
