Story
A spiritual seeker visited a highly esteemed spiritual Teacher. The seeker had heard the Teacher had been a devotee of a group that believed one must strictly keep religious Law to be accepted by God. Now, the Teacher was a leader in a spiritual group teaching that one was accepted by God apart from religious Law.
The seeker spoke to the Teacher. He said, "Sir, how do you live differently, now that you are in a group stressing God accepts us apart from our keeping religious Law? Your life must have changed much." The Teacher confounded the seeker, saying, "Well, friend, my life is pretty much the same as before, except now I strive to live a holy life because God in love has accepted me, when before I strove to live a holy life for I wanted God in love to accept me."
Comments
Grace is ironic. Grace is ironic in that it produces effects that one would, in the carnal mind, think Grace impossible to produce. The carnal mind says, "God would certainly not accept me unless I keep the rules." And, "Without religion based on rules, then persons will never live holy lives." The spiritual mind says, "Grace is the fount of a Love that motivates me from Love to please Love." Salvation through religious law will produce religious fanatics, self-righteous exclusionists, dogmatists, and legalists; salvation through Love yields the fruit of Love by Lovers.
